미국의 두 최대 음료회사 Coca-Cola와 Pepsi-Co가 지난 5년간 벌여온 “적과의 동침’ 을 폭로하는 New York Times 기사를 소개합니다. 인식의 부조화(cognitive dissonance)라는 생소한 표현이 이제는 너무도 익숙해진 요즘, 이 기사는 대기업의 사회자선활동(corporate philanthropy) 과 동시에 이루어진 검은 로비의 의혹에 대해 질문을 던지고 있습니다.

최근 미국의 여러 도시들은 심각한 사회적 이슈인 비만 (obesity)문제를 줄이는 해결책의 하나로 설탕을 함유한 음료(sugary drinks)에 대한 세금을 부과하거나 판매를 규제하는 설탕규제법안(sugar tax)을 통과시키는 노력을 하고 있지요. 문제는 이러한 보건법안(pubic health measures)으로 인해 타격을 입게 될 코카콜라와 펩시콜라가 법안 저지를 위해  American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, Save the Children 등과 같은 100 여개 주요 보건연구 및 보건정책 단체들에  거액의 기부를 하는 동시에  그 들이 법안통과에 반대하도록 로비를 했다는 내용입니다. 기부금을 받은 해당 단체들은 법안찬성에 대한 기존의 입장을 철회(do an about face) 하거나 반대했고 이해관계의 충돌 (conflict of interest) 이 있다는 이유를 들어 입장 내기를 거부하는 등 기업의 편을 들어 준 것으로 조사에서 밝히고 있습니다.  New York Times 는 이 음료회사들과 보건기관들의 깊은 재정관계 (financial relationship)를 일반 언론 매체가 아닌 아메리칸 예방의학 저널 (American Journal of Preventive Medicine) 이 처음으로 체계적으로 조사 하여 발표했다는 것에 주목하고 있습니다.
